Hancock Beach

“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15: 12-13

Hancock Beach.

The Hancock Beach is one of my most frequently visited places in the area during summertime. There are 3 sand volleyball courts where people are almost always playing, and the sand is pretty decent except for being a little shallow in some places. There is a nice pavilion with a fire pit, plenty of picnic tables, bathrooms, changing rooms, playground, etc… And the beach is right on the outskirts of Hancock. Of course, this beach is on the Portage Canal – not actually on Lake Superior. But its Lake Superior water that’s cool, clean, and fresh. And the lawn / beach is a good place for laying in the sun, getting that all-important sun-tan. I like this beach during the early afternoon on weekdays because it is least crowded then. I’ve been here with my beach towel during April, when there was still 50% ice on the canal. There is also a nice dock at this beach, and a marked swimming area. This is the best beach location on the Portage Canal, and is the most popular. On weekends it could be better to take a trip elsewhere because it gets crowded.

Usually overcrowded. Overrated. I don’t care for this place but everyone else likes it. It has everything a beach needs. I like the Houghton beach better. You don’t have it on your list tho.

It can be overcrowded. The volleyball courts are decent though. It was a stretch for me to include Hancock and Chassell on my list since they are not on the actual Lake Superior shoreline.
